Case Study: 41,000 Volume Level 3 Trauma Center Improves Provider Engagement and Efficiency

The Challenge

This 40-bed emergency department, located in a difficult-to-staff location (due to inclement weather and distance from a major airport) was staffed by a large national management group. When we began working with them, they were down three full-time physicians, struggling with disengaged leadership, and had a disjointed team that was not invested in the local community.

“I’ve worked my whole career in healthcare and I’ve never run across physicians with a better understanding of how to transform an ED.”
— Chief Executive Officer , Non-profit hospital.

The solution

We prioritized developing an engaged medical director and worked to change the team mindset from a group of providers who worked a shift and went home to a locally invested team actively involved in hospital committees. After improving provider engagement and establishing an engaged medical director, the practice culture itself attracted recruits. We are now able to recruit from top residencies and maintain a full staff. Improving practice culture and provider engagement led to notable improvements in LWOBS, length of stay, and door-to-doctor metrics within one year.

The RESULTS

Within one year, these improvements resulted in:

2.3% to 1.2%

DROP IN LWBS METRICS

6% reduction

IN LENGTH OF STAY
